Dropping 30 Euros to become a member of Rock and Wall Climbing gym in Sevilla has been one of the best decisions I have made lately. I have met so many people who are incredibly nice and helpful and have been invited to go climbing in the nearby mountains twice in the last few weeks.
This time it was a two night camping trip to Villanueva del Rosario which is known for a ridiculously hard 9b+ route, called Chilam Balam, which I highly recommend you see in this video. The people who invited me, Alejandro and his girlfriend, Paola and Jose and his girlfriend, Claudia, are no here near good enough to climb Chilam Balam, which means I am even further from being able to climb it.
Instead we climbed some boulders in a section of the area where , just 50 years ago a piece of the mountain cracked off and a megalithic rock came tumbling down the mountain smashing into bits ranging in size from pebbles to the size of small houses.
Most of the boulder problems were really difficult but there was one that I really liked that had some slippery hands if you didn’t use them right.
Some friends of Jose’s, a guy and woman Rocio and Pedro from Granada and Silvia from Malaga, met us up in the bouldering section.
This was a really fun slab climb, the first time I have ever tried climbing slab. This is a type of climbing where there are no cracks or foot holds you just apply pressure to your feet and lean against the inclined rock wall. if you don’t have confidence in your feet you can psyche your self out and get stuck or slide back down . This happened to Claudia and she refused to climb for the next few hours.
and later we drove back down the deteriorating dirt road over to the other side of the valley to climb with ropes. Alvaro from Rock and Wall and a German guy Soren met us over at the rope climbing area.
The following day I was exhausted and barely climbed but I did try a fun route with a little chimney at the top here you have to push off of both sides and shimmy yourself up.
Paola, Claudia and I found a cave. I lead the way, climbing into a hold the size of a manhole cover to discover that there was a long tunnel that opened back up but I was too scared to go in there after seeing several crazy spiders.
